About Osotua
Osotua is a community-based conservation organization dedicated to building lasting coexistence between people and wildlife. Working alongside Maasai communities in Amboseli, we develop locally led solutions that protect biodiversity, strengthen livelihoods, and foster a shared future for generations to come.
The Meaning of Osotua
In the Maa language, Osotua means “umbilical cord.” More than its literal meaning, it represents a sacred covenant of trust, mutual support, and shared responsibility. Traditionally, Osotua describes an invisible bond that unites people through generosity, compassion, and helping one another according to need.
This philosophy is at the heart of our work. We believe that lasting conservation begins by strengthening the bond between communities, wildlife, and the landscapes they share. Guided by the spirit of Osotua, we work to transform conflict into coexistence and ensure that both people and nature can thrive together.
Our Mission
To build human–wildlife coexistence by partnering with Maasai communities in Amboseli to reduce conflict, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable, community-led conservation.
Our Vision
A future where people, wildlife, and nature thrive together in lasting harmony.
Our Story
Every day, communities living alongside wildlife in Amboseli face the realities of human–wildlife conflict. Livestock losses, threats to livelihoods, and pressure on wildlife create challenges that cannot be solved through conservation or community development alone.
Osotua was founded on the belief that lasting solutions come from partnership. Inspired by the Maa philosophy of Osotua—a sacred bond of mutual support—we work alongside local communities to promote practical, community-led approaches that reduce conflict, protect biodiversity, and strengthen the relationship between people and the natural world.
As a growing organization, we are committed to building trust, fostering collaboration, and creating a future where communities and wildlife can thrive together for generations.
